exercises in style

i renewed my car tag today. while i waited, i read raymond queneau's exercises in style. the book is essentially a writing exercise where queneau recounts a mundane event 99 times, employing a different writing style in each retelling. i happened to look up from my reading and notice a man who inspired me to immediately send the following text message:

"a man in front of me at the dmv has an imprisoned man's face staring through bars tatooed on the back of his bald head. only 41 people ahead of me..."

so, were i to witness and/or write the 100th version of queneau's mundane event, it would probably take this same concise, discreet text message form:

"a skinny guy on the bus just had a tantrum after an old guy jabbed him in the ribs. only 15 more stops..."

and then a bit later, i would likely send the following text:

"just saw same skinny dude getting fashion advice at the train station. i'll be danged."
